Patchy blowing and drifting is possible in open areas this afternoon, but this will become more likely this evening and tonight after a powerful arctic front pushes across the region. With plummeting temperatures, winds will gust to around 40 mph immediately behind the front, then ease slightly to 30 to 35 mph. These breezy conditions will lead to whiteout conditions in open areas with widespread blowing snow. Some additional snow is possible this evening with the front. Most areas will fall below zero by daybreak Monday, and remain below zero through early Wednesday. Wind chills will be dangerouly cold during this period, bottoming out between -30 and -40 Tuesday Morning.

ENGLAND – The country has faced an extraordinary combination of weather conditions over the last six weeks. Since 1st January flood defences have protected over 240,000 properties from flooding.
The recent flooding is the largest flood event we have ever recorded on the Somerset Moors and Levels.
We’re doing everything we can to pump water off the Somerset Levels as quickly as river and tide levels allow and are carrying out the single largest pumping operation ever experienced in Somerset.
Our pumps are working 24 hours a day to drain an estimated 65 million cubic metres of floodwater off an area of the Levels spanning 65 square kilometres.
Ongoing flooding is expected to continue on the Somerset Levels. There is also a risk of ground water flooding in Hampshire.
Heavy showers are expected later today, through tomorrow and on Wednesday across southern England. These are likely to bring localised disruption to travel in the southwest tonight and elsewhere across southern England tomorrow.
Our thoughts are with those communities that have, and in some places continue to, experience flooding.

This graph shows the cumulative number of preliminary tornado reports (not actual tornado number) for the past 9 years in USA. It shows how tornadoes happen throughout the year, and are not strictly limited to time or date. Two years stand out, 2008 and 2011. In 2008, there was pretty constant tornado activity throughout the year, while in 2011 the tornado activity was quite focused on the main season, with two major “spikes” that correspond to two major tornado outbreaks.
This year so far, has the second lowest number in the past 9 years.
A deep freeze has settled in over the Great Lakes this winter and a new image released by NASA shows the astonishing extent of the ice cover as seen from space. NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of the lakes on the early afternoon of Feb. 19, 2014. At the time, 80.3 percent of the five lakes were covered in ice, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Earlier this month, ice cover over the Great Lakes hit 88 percent for the first time since 1994. Typically at its peak, the average ice cover is just over 50 percent, and it only occasionally passes 80 percent, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory. 2-22-2014
