What is being described as the largest drill ever for a mega-quake in the Pacific Northwest kicked off Tuesday morning.
Federal officials say about 20,000 people will be involved in the disaster drill, representing various federal agencies, the U.S. military, state and local emergency response managers across the Pacific Northwest, Native American tribes and emergency management officials in British Columbia. The drill will last through June 11
After more than four days of action simulating a catastrophic magnitude 9.0 earthquake, the Cascadia Rising exercise has come to an end. More than 20,000 people across the Pacific Northwest took part in the drills, which put emergency response and recovery plans to the ultimate test. King County activated its Emergency Coordination Center, where hundreds of people came together to support the exercise response.
The biggest earthquake and tsunami drill in Northwest history is under way this week — and you can be part of it.
On Saturday, a dozen of Seattle’s Community Emergency Hubs will pick up where FEMA’s four-day Cascadia Risingexercise ends. While the exercise itself focuses on government and military response to a hypothetical magnitude 9 megaquake and tsunami from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the community hubs will simulate the challenges ordinary citizens will face on the fifth day after the disaster.
